THE ARCHITECT: CONCEPT AND DETAIL

The architect is responsible for the design concept and the procedures to be followed in the construction of the building. It is his or her name that is associated with the completed building. In addition, the architect may provide preliminary drawings and cost estimates to the developer, even before the building-site land has been completely assembled.

The architect will get the opinions of structural, electrical, and mechanical engineers, and of the contractor who has been chosen to put up the building, before the design details have been completely worked out on paper. Their practical experience and exchange of ideas result in simplified construction and aids the architect in the design decisions. The structural, electrical, and mechanical engineers are responsible to the architect for the detailed working drawings for each of their specialties.

The amount of paperwork the architects must produce is staggering. Everything that goes into the construction of the building—from the positioning of a 50-ton steel column to the location of the roof drains—must be indicated on the plans. It may take two, three, or more years to design a major project.

Today, construction is begun on many skyscrapers even before the plans are complete, because it is very costly to wait. Once the major elements in the building’s design are decided upon, work can begin. The less critical details of the architect’s plans can still be completed before the construction workers will need them.

Meanwhile, samples of all types of fixtures and material are studied, enabling the corporation or developer to secure bids from subcontractors, which will add up to the total cost.
